Hello mods! Potential applicant here. I'm thinking about apping this guy here from my obscure MMO canon that I doubt any of you are familiar with, so please bear with me while I try to explain this properly orz
Basically, Ain here has an unusual power that essentially allows him to write himself in and out of existence. When he's in an active state ("intervention") he can interact with the world, talk to people, etc, but he can also choose to deactivate this state of intervention, which results in him losing his ability to directly interact with the world. More importantly, turning intervention on and off rewrites the memories of everyone he's interacted with. When intervention is "on", people will remember him and everything he's done around them, as well as fill in the blanks for any time spent out of intervention (usually with him being quiet in the background, as it can't do things like give him credit for something he didn't do or make up things he would've said). When intervention is "off", the opposite occurs: everyone forgets he ever existed, and for any instances where he interacted with someone or affected them in some way that can't easily be overlooked (ie. saving someone from danger, telling them something important), they'll remember it as having happened differently (someone else did it, they managed it on their own, etc). This affects machines and other physical records as well (ie. disappearing from photos, notes left by him disappear or turn into someone else's writing), so it's more like rewriting reality vs just rewriting memories. There are other restrictions on the ability as well that I'm not really touching on here, so it's not always something he can flip on or off and sometimes he gets stuck in one particular state.
Obviously this is a pretty complicated thing to keep track of, so it's not really something that would come up constantly if I apped him. Since he'd be in an intervening state most of the time anyway, it could easily be assumed that he's actively existing at any given time unless something was arranged/plotted out in advance where he wouldn't be. The memory rewriting also isn't perfect, there are a couple instances in canon where his teammates get confused about forgetting he was there and at least one of them manages to catch on that he's doing something weird. The protagonist also tends to notice Ain's absence while he's not intervening, so it's somewhat implied that anyone with a similar sensitivity to his particular brand of supernatural would be able to vaguely remember him. I could probably play a bit more loosely with this (other worlds, other rules!) to explain any possible slip-ups as well as make it so more character might be able to catch on to him.
All of that said... while it would be simpler to remove the ability and have him always in a state of intervention, it's a very important ability to him and he'd definitely panic if he realized it was gone. That could be fun to play around with as well, but I think it would also be interesting to have the option available to use for situations where it might be more useful for him to "disappear" for awhile. It could also lead to opportunities for CR with characters who would be able to notice his absence. It would definitely be something I'd get mod approval for if it would affect the plot in some way, and if it would last any lengthy periods of time I'd be sure to communicate that with other players who might be affected.
I hope all of that makes sense! If there's anything you want me to explain better I can definitely do that, but basically what I'm asking is do you think it would be plausible to allow this type of ability? Or do you think it would need to be restricted/limited in any additional ways to make it more manageable if it came up?
