MISSION: NALAWI All characters, old or new, will receive this dossier to their devices. Thus, consider all information hereon as ICly available to all characters. NALAWI BRIEFING
NALAWI OVERVIEW Nalawi is a tropical place, with fine, warm, sunny weather, and fierce tropical storms. The people here are diminutive deer-like people, no higher than 4 feet tall, and the amenities are built to their size. Each citizen of Nalawi has a “Gift of Nalanni”, which manifests as a power or ability unique to them, developed around puberty. The entire society is built around these gifts, and jobs tend to be based on what your ability enables you to contribute. For example, there is no running water in residences or businesses, it is instead been the task of Water Runners -- those with the ability to shape and control water -- to keep it supplied to and functioning within public water houses. The entire country is a cluster of islands, varying in size. The largest one is about 2,000 square miles, which houses the capital city and seat of government, and the smallest ones are sometimes only large enough for a few houses. Most people own a boat unless they have an ability to circumvent a need for it, but many of the islands are close enough that swimming between them is also an option. Some of them can even be walked to via sandbar, if the tide is low and you don’t mind wading. ![]() There are a number of active volcanoes throughout Nalawi, which are regarded as sacred and much beloved. After all, these volcanoes produce the very land these people walk on. Each active volcano is built around carefully, and eruptions are well planned for. Very rarely does an eruption cause any property damage, let alone endanger lives. It is considered sacrilegious to try to control the timing of an eruption or course the lava once it is in motion, although there are many Gifts among the citizens that could manage it. The largest, most active volcano, Nalalona, is set on an island that is empty by necessity. It erupts often enough that any buildings on that island would almost certainly be destroyed. It is commonly believed that the goddess Nalanni lives within Nalalona, and each eruption is seen as a good omen for the country. Citizens of this world believe that Nalanni is responsible for each of their extraordinary gifts, a belief that is strengthened by the fact that eruptions tend to boost their powers, particularly eruptions from Nalalona. Recently, however, all volcanic activity has ceased. Starting with Nalalona and then spreading out to the other smaller volcanoes, first the eruptions slowed, then stopped, and now not even tremors can be felt. Shortly after that, people’s Gifts began to fade. It wasn’t all at once, and many people still have their powers, but there is no denying that they are disappearing. Some whisper even that the worst has happened: Nalanni is dead. In the wake of the disappearance of powers, the entire society has been beginning to fail. Their technology is badly underdeveloped, as they have based most of their day-to-day needs and activities around having someone with the appropriate Gift to manage it. In some places there is now no central electricity, no running water, difficulty with travel between islands, and some of the crops and farms are going out of control and losing their harvests. Nalawi is a nation in a state of rising crisis. ![]() |

or even better, does nalawi have their own equivalent of christmas/santa claus?
no subject
They do, however, have a rough equivalent to Christmas. It's celebrated when the days are at their shortest, and is similar in terms of gift-giving and feasting. It's also believed that an enormous water spirit swims down from the northern water and visits each house. Each family leaves a fresh fish on the stoop, and in turn receives a small present. Any house without a fresh fish laid out on the stoop gets a load of rotten seaweed left there instead. Depictions of the water spirit look suspiciously like a bear, although there are no bears on Nalawi.

so uh, if north were to wait by the northern beach of some island and wait for santa bear so he can exchange stories about their gift-giving parade, would he be able to possibly catch a glimpse of the spirit...

it's okay he'll just spend every downtime he has hanging out there anyway, thank you mods!!
Re: QUESTIONS?
So while Cassie's strength and reflexes are a result of being half Olympian, and her combat from training, I'm not sure about her power of flight. It's described as an "act of sheer will". Should I regard that as a form of magic, then, or natural skill? Whatever you guys think is best. I've never stopped to wonder that deeply on the nature of that "will" before, so I'd like to cover my bases on how to proceed!

The power loss does not affect magical beings only. Anything above "baseline human" will not be in play (or it will be dampened, per player discretion) for the duration of the power loss. An exception would be if the ability is linked to something visibly physical; for example, if a character has wings, they may still fly. But if the character has a healing ability linked to their genetics, that will no longer be functional.
We understand there's a thin line here, so feel free to ask us for clarification on your character's specific abilities!
hoping this is the right place!!
How do the Nalawi show they worship Nalanni?
One of the logs mentioned offerings and asking for her protection, and I know there's the temple and artwork (forgive me if I'm forgetting anything else you've mentioned!), but would recruits have been able to get any idea of general ways to worship or show respect to Nalanni prior to the big eruption and being stranded by storm?

He's got a back-up plan to request emigration of a handful of willing Nalawi if ALASTAIR is capable of handling them, with the hopes that they can be resettled somewhere that is suitable for them, be it another planet, somewhere in Oska, or what have you. This would require contact with someone on the Oska-side of the team, and contact with a leader from the Nalawi (probably using the token that Nalanni gave to him to prove his sincerity in his promise to protect them whatever the means necessary. Providing that something like this can be done, he'll eventually be passing the opal on to the leader of the group that emigrates from the islands. :c He knows what a bummer it is to lose a deity but he wants them to know that Nalanni loves them and has faith in them.)
What's the best way to go about this? Is there a specific post that you'd like me to place each of these requests in, or a timeline that I should be following? I'm hoping that Laedo can have Ramir contact an Oska NPC (she's leading him on to believe that she's the go-to-gal to talk with them) while he's speaking with Haise, Rhys and Sorey about ferrying Nalawi to a safe house (or safe houses) on island. These characters may wind up involved, though I'm still in the midst of threading out those results!

There's no need to put requests for these in any specific place! We are fine with you asking us here, since neither of these are strictly a player plot. You may freely make up your own safe spots (unoccupied islands, etc) to temporarily relocate the Nalawi. As a note, both Nalanni and Ryba are far away from Pu'ulai and the other main islands (to the west), so it's not necessary to move anyone too far from home.
The goddess battles will occur on June 3, so evacuation efforts will need to be made before then.
As for resettling the Nalawi, this is not strictly necessary! The reason for defeating the goddesses is to ensure that the planet will live for a long time to come, so they will be safe and sound on their home world! If Laedo would like to try and recruit some Nalawi to ALASTAIR anyway, you may have him contact the NPCs or simply handwave that they will be coming back to Oska with the rest. Keep in mind that not many Nalawi (if any at all!) will agree to be recruited, considering they are understandably upset with the recruits for killing their goddess.

As an alternative to having Nalawi-folk recruited to ALASTAIR, what would happen if Laedo adamantly wanted to remain with them for a time? There are a number of factors coming together that would make him feel terribly guilty, to the point that he would think that the only way to fix it would be to help them get on their feet by providing them with food, shelter, and perhaps casting some spells on their items to help give better coverage. Would it be possible to use some time shenanigans to have him stay with them for a year and return to Oska after, say, two weeks had passed for everyone else? I'm not looking for a hiatus but I'm wondering if split timelines and time loops and things are possible in this world-hopping setting, and I'd be curious about how that might temper his personality a little bit upon a return.

The reactions to the concept of the forced eruption are varied, and are explained within the body of this log. If you're referring to the aftermath, that will be included in the upcoming write-up on May 1, so hang tight! Remember, the events of this log lasted for two weeks, so there won't be much time between the eruption/explosion and the next event.
As for what to expect from local opinions, you'll have to be more specific as to what you're looking to ask. We are already in discussions with another player about council events, so look out for that, too!

May I ask who the player is regarding council events? I'd like to work Chrollo in that direction.

Masamune's player would be the one to contact if you're interested in working with her. We're still working on the details though, so hang tight.
