GENERAL QUESTIONS

WHAT IS FUTUROLOGY?
Futurology is a science fantasy mission-based game where characters are part of a fortune-hunting coalition that is employed by different worlds throughout the multiverse for service and support. The missions are a mix of action/adventure and investigation, and often include morally difficult decisions. Mission outcomes regularly depend on a combination of character action and player voting.

Though there will be opportunities both between and during missions for rest and laid-back activities, the game at its core is mission-based and is not geared toward slice-of-life play. You should expect your character to be on mission a majority of the time, during which the focus will be solving puzzles, action, investigation, and exploration. If recurrent action/adventure overwhelms you or if you are more interested in playing slice-of-life aspects, please take the time to consider if Futurology is the right game for you.

Futurology is closed as of 9 June 2018.

WHAT ARE THE COMMUNITIES?
[community profile] futurology is the network community, for text/voice/video posts. For more information about how the in-game network operates, please see our devices guide.

[community profile] epidemiology is the log community, where action threads can be logged out.

[community profile] axiology is the OOC community.

[community profile] typology is where IC files are kept. For more information, please see our file guide.

[community profile] thirstology is the meme comm.

EXPLAIN MISSIONS.
Characters will be sent to various worlds on missions, which will last an average of three months; the exact ending date may change depending on character actions. Characters will be given housing in the area and an appropriate amount of pocket money, along with opportunities to gather information from the locals.

As information comes in, groups of characters will be sent to do certain tasks. For example, say the current monarch has been acting strange and erratic lately, and sentences all dissenters to death. The characters discover that just before this began, a travelling circus came to town. A group will investigate the travelling circus performers while the rest attempt to keep peace in town, and discover that one of the performers is actually an evil sorcerer who has been controlling the monarch through an enchanted item that was surreptitiously placed on their person while they were watching the circus.

Certain tasks will be entirely voluntary through our Bounty Board system, where characters can choose to participate. In the interest of keeping characters who might be disinclined to work involved, certain tasks will be mandatory.

Characters are allowed to go off and do their own thing relating to missions, but they need to be discussed with mods first (so we can tell you the basics of how it'd go down, like whether or not that passage in the sewers leads anywhere important, etc!) and logged out, either with a group or as a narrative.

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?
Be active! Simply by being a part of the game, your character has involvement in the plot. Extra activity will give you more chances to be involved and learn more about each world. You may also run player plots. Characters will be allowed to go off on their own and attempt certain things as long as it has been cleared by a mod and they write a thread or narrative detailing it. Submit player plot ideas here.

META INFORMATION

WHAT IS HATHAWAY?
Hathaway is a coalition of fortune-hunting guilds composed of anyone from mercenaries to do-gooders. Their reach spans the multiverse, throughout which they travel at the behest of planetary natives for help with various tasks, which are generally related to the fallout. These errands may run from helping depose a dictator to planning a party, but what they all have in common is that Hathaway's services come with a price -- typically monetary, but haggling and bartering is not unheard of.

Joining Hathaway is a simple affair. Potential volunteers are greeted by a member of Hathaway's recruitment staff and are told what will be expected of them if they accept the job. They will be offered the opportunity to work towards a personal goal as incentive for their participation; part of their stipend will go toward acquiring the incentive until they've paid for the necessary parts, labor, etc.

Guilds are headed by guild masters, whose wealth allows for them to pay for the guild operations, as well as dues to Hathaway and stipends for their volunteers. Guild masters have no real power over their guilds outside of the monetary realm; think of them less as your "boss" and more like the bank that's giving you a small business loan.

Player characters are part of the guild Ophelia, whose guild master is the merchant princess Imogen.

For ICly available information on Hathaway, please check the IC Guide.

HOW DOES MY CHARACTER ARRIVE?
Please see our welcome page.

WHAT IS HATHAWAY HQ?
Hathaway HQ is a large, sprawling spaceship of 1600 meters (roughly one mile) in length and three decks: the hangar, personnel quarters, and the work deck. For more information about Hathaway HQ, please visit the Headquarters page.

WHO ARE THE NPCS? CAN I THREAD WITH THEM?
Hathaway NPCs are many and varied, and are mostly composed of members of other guilds. They come in a variety of species, ages, and genders, with unique backgrounds and skillsets. Characters will sometimes interact with them on mission, and other guilds are generally in Hathaway HQ during downtime, during which interactions can typically be handwaved.

In addition to other guilds, there is also Hathaway support staff. They are almost always in Hathaway HQ, ensuring everything runs smoothly in the background. Support staff includes rift machine technicians, vendors, medical staff, cooks, mechanics, weaponsmiths, etc.

To learn more about Hathaway NPCs, please check the NPC page in the IC Files.

Different mission worlds will also have NPCs, most of whom can be reasonably handwaved at your discretion. Important NPCs will always be named, and interacting with them must be run by the mods first.

To keep it simple for the mods, interactions with named NPCs will generally be semi-handwaved. This means that if your character has a specific question for an NPC, you can direct it to us OOCly and we'll let you know what the response would be. To make things easier for everyone to follow, these semi-handwaved "conversations" should be asked on the mission dossier or the general game FAQ.

There will also be occasional opportunities to do full threads with NPCs. In these situations, threading with an NPC will not count toward your activity proofs.

SO WHAT EXACTLY IS THE BOUNTY BOARD?
The Bounty Board is a way for characters to get involved with the setting outside the main mission. Mission locals and Hathaway NPCs alike will request tasks through the board, and they are completed by threading them out. Unless noted, there is no limit to how many characters can complete a certain bounty, and some bounties are even marked as repeatable.

The Bounty Board is also how better-than-average weapons and armor are obtained, as well as magical or technologically-advanced artifacts that can be used to enhance your character's arsenal. Most weapon/object/artifact bounties will have a set reward, but high-level bounties will be marked as having individualized rewards. Because of the work involved in customization, high-level bounties will always require sign-ups before they are undertaken.

Additionally, participation through the Bounty Board is the only way to level up your character's specialization. Characters may only turn in one specialization bounty every other month.

Bounties must be completed and turned in before the start of the following mission, or the reward will not be granted. In order to be eligible for turn-in, a normal bounty thread must be at least double AC-length (10 comments from you). High-level bounties will have different requirements.

For more information, check the Bounty Board.

WHAT ARE SPECIALIZATIONS?
Every member of Hathaway is assigned a specialization based on their active or latent talents. Specializations can be strengthened by going through the Bounty Board, with a higher ranking specialization coming with new skills and unique chances to interact with the game.

Skills and abilities related to specializations are granted through the acquisition of magitek trinkets, without which characters would no longer have the ability. Standard trinket forms are jewelry or special gems forged into a weapon (or other item), but it's ultimately your character's choice if they would like something different.

For more information, check out our specialization overview.

WHAT IS ALASTAIR? ZYMANDIS?
ALASTAIR and Zymandis were two centuries-spanning organizations that struggled to deal with an energy crisis that plagued the multiverse and threatened multiversal instability. ALASTAIR attempted to selectively guide each universe to ensure the continuation of the Timeline, while Zymandis sought to cull each universe so the multiverse would begin anew.

Following a decisive battle between ALASTAIR and Zymandis, the infinite multiverse has merged into a stable finite multiverse, making both organizations obsolete. Agents of both organizations went on to form Hathaway in order to deal with the fallout.

The ALASTAIR/Zymandis conflict and the Timeline's energy crisis was the primary metaplot of Futurology from October 2015 to November 2017. Many characters have continued on from this time. For ICly available information on these organizations, please check the IC Guide.

WHAT IS THE "FALLOUT"?
Due to the merging of the multiverse, there are occasional glitches in reality where twin universe that have merged have differences that cannot be reconciled. For example, a set of universes that are identical except for who won an election may glitch and now have two presidents. Hathaway is often called in to mediate these situations.

In addition to merging glitches, there is also fallout from the temporal crystal used in the merging. When the temporal crystal's energy was used, it shattered into thousands of pieces that spread throughout the multiverse. The temporal shards can have an adverse effect on biological creatures who come into contact with it, and they can attract timeline-eating beasts that can cause permanent damage to the fabric of reality. Hathaway may encounter these shards on their missions, and are given the tools to dispose of them safely.

I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT . . .
Please check the the IC Guide first! Most ICly known information is here, but if you cannot find the topic you're looking for, go ahead and ask here. If it's something pertinent we overlooked, we may add it to the guide!

APPLICATIONS

WHAT CHARACTERS CAN I APP?
You can app any fandom, canon AU, or original character. Fandom OCs are allowed but must be from open worlds such as tabletop games, MMORPGs, etc.

Companion type characters can be apped, provided that they display sufficient personality within their canon. For example, Kero from Cardcaptor Sakura and many of the droids from Star Wars would be considered appable; however, Naga from the Legend of Korra would not. You're always welcome to ask the mods if you're unsure if your character would be appable.

The following characters are not allowed to be apped:

Biographical characters. While historical fiction such as Assassin's Creed, the Fate/ series, or Showtime's The Borgias is fine, you may not app from biographical canons like American Crime Story or Hamilton: An American Musical.

Character doubles. If there is already a Sherlock Holmes from the novels in-game, we will not allow any other version of Sherlock Holmes to be apped (BBC Sherlock, Elementary, Guy Ritchie's films, etc).

CRAUs. Characters with previous history from another game on DWRP or a different platform are not allowed. (An exception is made for tabletop or MMO characters, as players are welcome to include their tabletop/MMO game history.)

Dead characters. If your character has died in canon, you cannot play them after their point of death, even if they are shown in some kind of afterlife. This is because of IC limitations: Hathaway won't revive the dead and they simply can't reach into the afterlife for recruitment! However, you can app them from their moment of death (see here for information) and if your character is undead -- that is, a vampire, ghost, etc. -- they are certainly allowed.

Fandom AUs. You could app 2014!Castiel from Supernatural, but not from an "always a human" AU that you constructed. This includes post-canon or unseen speculation; your canon point must be a part of canon.

WHAT ABOUT NON-HUMANOIDS?
Non-humanoids can be apped, but they must be able to communicate and carry out tasks given to them. If they can do so with their original body, they can keep it. If they can't, a synthetic (android) body will be provided for them by Hathaway.

There currently are no height restrictions for characters. Please use your best judgment if your extremely tall or extremely tiny character will be suitable for the game.

IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE REQUIRED?
Currently, characters must be 15 or older to volunteer for service into Hathaway. This is in terms of maturity; in cases such as robots or other creatures who mature quickly, the chronological age does not matter.

In the case of normally-aging humans, if you can make an argument that your under-15 character has a sufficient maturity level, please contact the mods before submitting your app and we will make a decision on their suitability.

OOCly, there is no minimum age requirement for players. However, Futurology does contain mature themes such as death and difficult moral choices, so please use your discretion when applying.

CAN I APP FROM A NEWLY RELEASED CANON?
You may app from canons as soon as they are released provided there is enough canon for the character you wish to app. We ask that you be respectful of other players and put up a spoiler opt-out post if you do app from recently released canons.

ARE THERE ANY CHARACTER/CANON/GAME CAPS?
There is currently a cast cap of six characters per canon and a cap of 60 players in-game.

HOW MANY CHARACTERS CAN I PLAY?
Players are currently allowed to have a maximum of two characters in-game at a time.

In order to apply for a second character, a player must submit double AC (six proofs) for two months, for a total of twelve proofs over those two months.

These proofs must come from consecutive months (e.g., September and October, but not September and November), unless you were on hiatus, in which case you can provide the proofs from the last two months you submitted full AC.

Proofs must be complete at the time of the submission in accordance with our AC rules. Please see the applications page for additional details.

DO YOU HAVE RESERVES? DO YOU ALLOW APP CHALLENGES?
We currently do not have a reserve system. Additionally, at this point in time, we do not allow app challenges for the same character as we feel this is not be feasible with our current application process.

WHEN ARE APPS OPEN? WHEN ARE THEY PROCESSED?
Apps are only open between missions during downtime at Hathaway HQ. App openings will always be announced ahead of time on our calendar page as well as our mod plurk, [plurk.com profile] futurology.

New or returning players may submit an app when the app page is open as long as there are more than six player slots available. The number of players in-game at any given time can be found on the app page.

Current players apping a second character may app at any time that apps are open, provided they have the required proofs.

Apps are processed every weekend (as space allows) during open app periods.

WHAT IF I APP A CHARACTER SOMEONE ELSE PLAYED BEFORE?
No matter the method of the previous player's drop, your character will be a different version, meaning they come from a slightly different version of their canon universe. The difference is minuscule and probably doesn't even relate to your character at all (for example, a stranger on the other side of the planet ate a salad instead of a sandwich one day), but it is enough for the universe to have split into a different, alternate reality.

This means that your character will not have the previous version's memories of their time in Hathaway. It also means that, should you drop, the previous version can reapp with their own memories (provided they didn't permanently drop).

WHAT ARE INCENTIVES?
Because the promise of adventure and pocket money may not be enough to impress volunteers, Hathaway offers to use its connections to fulfill incentives. They can be anything from a big payout to the cure for a disease, and everything in between.

ICly, guild masters will hire contractors to work toward achieving your character's incentive, using a small portion of their stipend to fund the work. OOCly, the incentive is ready whenever you would like to have your character retire through a permanent drop (see "How Can My Character Retire?" in the OOC Mechanics section).

There are some limits to what kind of incentive is possible:

No reviving the dead. This is generally possible through the miracle of science or magic, but it isn't pretty and reputable contractors will refuse to do so on moral grounds.

No time travel. Hathaway's scientists and magicians are not capable of this.

No instant murder. Asking for someone to drop dead is impossible. However, one could ask to hire an assassin -- this does not mean there is a guarantee the assassin will be successful.

No making someone fall in love/changing someone's attitude, thoughts, or feelings. This is akin to hypnosis and is a hotly debated topic. In order to avoid the implications of interfering with autonomy, this service is not offered.

Nothing intangible. The incentive has to be something that is achievable through the laws of physics. In other words, you cannot ask "make me king," but you can ask for help overthrowing a king so you can take their place.

▸ Nothing your character doesn't know to ask for. Your character must already have the knowledge to ask for it. It must be knowledge they already have in-canon or, if you are updating their incentive after time in game, knowledge they have naturally acquired. Outside knowledge and informants cannot be involved; this is a solo deal.

If you need help coming up with a suitable incentive for your character, please see the incentive workshop page.

WHAT IS THE SUITABILITY SECTION?
This section is in place to help you gauge whether or not your character is suitable for the action/adventure missions we have at Futurology.

While we emphatically do not require all characters to be action heroes, they must be willing to participate in field missions in some manner. ICly, characters may transfer from field work at any time if they find they are unsuited. However, because the game is focused on field missions, there is this no way to facilitate this sort of transfer in-game without requiring a drop.

This section is also here to help you decide if your character would willingly volunteer to Hathaway. There are no tricks or disinformation involved in the recruitment process and characters are free to quit at any time, so it is important that your character is voluntarily joining.

While writing this section, if you find that you cannot reconcile your character's personality with willing participation in both Hathaway and field missions, this may be a sign you should select a different character.

OOC MECHANICS

WHAT ARE THE ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS?
Activity Check is open from 00:01 UTC on the 1st of every month to 23:59 UTC on the 5th. Activity must be provided within that timeframe. Late submissions are not accepted, and will result in an idle.

We require three proofs of activity per month. Acceptable proofs are as follows:

Five action/log comments in a single thread. These can be in any community if, for example, a network thread turns to action.

Seven network comments in a single thread. These can be from any community or IC inboxes. Please note: all IC inbox threads are considered network threads. You may only provide one inbox proof per month.

Either of the above in a single plot-marked thread. These must be from a post that is marked by mods with a !plot tag. You must provide at least one plot-marked proof every month. Regular thread counts apply to plot-marked proofs (seven if it's network or five if it's action/log). Bounty threads in plot-marked posts do not count toward this requirement.

Every third month, we hold a mandatory HMD/critique post that is required for passing AC. These months are always marked on the calendar. Failure to fill out HMD before the deadline (when that month's AC opens) will result in an idle.

If you are on hiatus during an HMD month, you may either supply it that month or turn it in with your AC the following month. If you miss the HMD deadline while you are on hiatus, you may still fill it out before the next month's AC with no penalty.

ANY OTHER ACTIVITY RESTRICTIONS?
All threads must be with different characters.

You may not provide multiple proofs from castmates.

All threads submitted must have been started and completed during that month. Threads started from months prior cannot be used as proofs. Threads started or completed during the AC check-in period (between the 1st and 5th of every month) cannot be used as proofs.

Posts themselves are not eligible for activity check. You must use threads.

You may submit more than one proof from the same post, including plot-marked posts.

Top-levels (including those posted in the body of a post) can count toward your comment count, but please indicate which thread branch you are submitting so we don't have to guess!

Threads with NPCs do not count toward activity.

Test Drive Meme threads may count for characters who are in game at the time of the threads. In other words, you cannot use TDM threads for proofs before you were accepted into the game. TDM threads do not count toward the !plot requirement.

If the mods notice your activity has been consistently lacking over several months, we reserve the right to contact you and ask you to improve in order to stay in the game. This includes routinely turning in the bare minimum, only tagging the same characters every month, dropping threads once they reach AC length, etc.

WHAT IF I'M NEW?
New characters will need to provide one proof in the month they were accepted. This proof does not need to be plot-marked. Failure to provide activity will result in an idle.

WHAT IF I'LL BE BUSY?
If you will be too busy to make AC, you can take a hiatus. You may take a hiatus at any time during the month and it will exempt you from that month's AC. You are still allowed tag while you are on hiatus!

You are allowed to take one hiatus per trimester, for a total of three hiatuses per year. Trimesters occur every four months:

Trimester one: January through April

Trimester two: May through August

Trimester three: September through December

We will always note when trimesters change over on the game calendar.

Consecutive hiatuses are not allowed, even if they are in different trimesters, and will result in the character being idled. If you have extenuating circumstances, please contact the mods before AC closes so we can discuss it on a case-by-case basis.

ICly, characters on hiatus can be on autopilot or sent on a side-mission that would take them away from the guild for the duration of the hiatus. In order to create a side-mission, follow the instructions for a purple bounty on the Bounty Board page.

WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH ACTIVITY AND CAN'T HIATUS?
If you find you do not have activity and already used your hiatus for that trimester, you will have to drop the game and re-apply whenever apps open next.

However, if you believe you have extenuating circumstances that prevented you from tagging, please contact the mods through the strike page before AC closes and we will discuss it with you on a case-by-case basis. All comments on the strike page are screened for privacy. We define extenuating circumstances as unforeseen and unpredictable circumstances that affect your ability to participate in the game to the fullest extent.

Please be aware that requesting a strike is not a guarantee it will be granted. You must explain why you need the strike in order for us to make an informed decision. You don't need to go into great detail and may be as vague as you like (i.e., "mental health"), but a reason is required.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DROP?
For regular drops, you may choose to have your character sent to a different guild, or sent to a support role within Hathaway. If you idle out, your character is by default sent to a different guild.

If you later reapply for the same character and elect to keep their in-game memories of their previous stay, you are welcome to come up with your own ideas for missions they may have gone on while they were in a different guild, or what they did while on support staff. Please submit your ideas with your app so we can get them approved!

You may also choose to have your character quit. ICly, characters may quit Hathaway at any time; there is no mechanic in place keeping them employed. If you elect to have your character quit, this will be considered a permanent drop and you may not reapply with previous memories. If you wish to reapply for the same character, they will be freshly hired from a slightly different universe.

Drops are IC knowledge; a handwaved message is sent out alerting the entire guild each time someone transfers, quits, or retires.

Please use the drop post. If you idle out, the mods reserve the right to kill your character off for plot reasons at our discretion. Additionally, if you idle out, you will be unable to submit an app for any character until the next app round; if you idle out within the two months before app round, you will need to wait until the following app round.

HOW CAN MY CHARACTER RETIRE?
If your character has been in-game longer than six OOC months, you can drop them via retirement. This means they will retire from duty with their incentive achieved and will be sent home. Please note that the six months is an OOCly required time period and should not be ICly noticed.

Because reapplying a character that has returned home would effectively make them an AU, retirement is considered a permanent drop. They can still be apped by a new player or by yourself at a later point, but you will not be allowed to reapply for that character with their previous memories.

DOES THIS MEAN MY CHARACTER'S MEMORIES ARE WIPED AFTER A PERMADROP?
Not at all! Whether a character retires or quits (that is, you choose to institute a permanent drop), they keep their memories of their time in Hathaway in their post-game lives. There is no memory wipe mechanic in-game.

CAN I CANON UPDATE? CAN I CHANGE MY CHARACTER'S INCENTIVE OR SPECIALIZATION?
You may canon update by following the instructions on this page. Please note you may not canon backdate! If you wish to change your character's canon point to something in the past, you will need to drop and re-app without memories.

You may change your character's incentive or specialization along with a canon update or independently. If you would like to change incentives or specializations independently of a canon update, you can also find the form here. Please note that changes to incentives or specializations are only allowed once every six months, regardless of if they come with a canon update.

IC MECHANICS

WHAT'S THE TIME ZONE/DAY RATIO?
The game runs on UTC time (GMT+0). To convert UTC to your time zone, you can use this website.

The game also runs on a 1:1 day ratio, meaning for every one OOC day, one IC day occurs. Sometimes OOC time dilation is needed for the sake of events, and these will always be noted. For the sake of ease, if astronomical events such as eclipses or full moons affect your character, they will occur on the same days that they do IRL.

IS THERE A LANGUAGE BARRIER?
Yes and no! All spoken language and messages (voice or text) sent over the network will be magically translated so that characters can understand each other. They are not translated to any particular language, though they become mutually intelligible thanks to the magitek of the jewelcomms.

Generally speaking, written language in books and notes will not be translated except for those in available in Hathaway HQ. During mission debriefing, Hathaway technicians will upload language packs to characters' jewelcomms. This will allow them to read any native languages the technicians might expect them to encounter in mission worlds. Please note that this will not affect characters who cannot read in the first place!

If a character removes their jewelcomm from their person, they will no longer have the luxury of automatic translation. So keep it close and keep it safe!

HOW DOES THE NETWORK WORK?
Characters will receive an enchanted piece of jewelry of their choosing on their arrival to Hathaway HQ. When the wearer wishes it, it will display videos or text in front of them that only they can see, or play audio messages.

There is no physical or holographic keyboard; characters need only think up the message they wish to send via text. They can broadcast "thought text," video, or audio messages to the whole crew or have one-on-one conversations via personal inboxes.

Although filtering to certain groups of people is not possible and neither are private threads to specific characters, you may mark something as "private" as shorthand for a thread carried over to a character's inbox. Anonymous posts and replies are also not allowed. All conversations in a network broadcast are publicly visible, and voice-to-text/dictation is available for those who need it.

The piece of jewelry can be whatever the characters want, within reason -- Hathaway will provide a variety of necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, etc., but they don't have any enchanted belly button piercings, for example! As long as it's somewhat professional, characters will be allowed to have it.

Characters will be allowed to choose a name to identify themselves by when they first use their jewelry. Usernames can contain spaces and symbols, so Two Words! works fine. If they decline to choose a username, it will default to their real name, all lowercase, no spaces, i.e. johndoe.

For more information on the network, please see the devices guide!

IS THERE A UNIFORM?
Yes! Hathaway uniforms are reminiscent of military dress, with epaulets and buttons on the coats and jackets. There are different versions of the uniform depending on occasion (formal, tactical, casual, etc.) and terrain (desert, jungle, snow, etc.).

Guild Ophelia's specific uniform standard looks like this. For artistic purposes, the colors are dark red (#cc0000), metallic gold (#d4af37), and black. Uniforms may be modified however your character sees fit.

Magitek thread is woven into the uniform fabric, making the uniform fireproof, hydrophobic, and dirt-repellant. Minor tears will automatically repair themselves, but if a new uniform is required, characters need only place it inside the wardrobe in their HQ apartment; magitek nodes inside the wardrobe will instantly repair any damage.

WHAT CAN MY CHARACTERS BRING WITH THEM?
Characters can bring whatever is on their person at their canon point. This includes clothing, trinkets, armor, and weapons. Please detail what your character is bringing with them in the inventory section of your application.

They may also bring any personal items with them as long as it fits in a duffel bag or footlocker. The living quarters in Hathaway HQ are not very spacious, so they will need to make a decision about what's important enough for them to bring along.

Characters can also bring pets and mounts, provided that the animals (or robots, etc.) already belong to them. There is a two pet limit per character; this includes both pets/mounts the character brings from their home world as well as pets/mounts earned through the Bounty Board. Please be aware that we have a no breeding policy in place when it comes to pets; all pets will be magically neutered while in Hathaway. Those furry families your recruit dreams of will have to wait.

If your character's companion is arguably sapient -- that is, if someone else could app them -- then they cannot be brought with. See our section on apps for more information.

WHAT ABOUT MY CHARACTER'S MAGICAL PET?
If your character's pet is magical or has other special powers, please list its abilities on your app. Game-breaking abilities will be nerfed, so please check in with us first if you're unsure.

If your character's pet is extra large, it will be reduced to the size of a horse. Mounts may not carry more than one rider and one passenger. Flying pets and mounts are allowed, but they may not fly outside of the mission's area map. (For example, if the mission is taking place in London, you may not ride it to Scotland.)

WHAT ABOUT MY CHARACTER'S POWERS?
All powers are allowed. Potentially game-breaking powers will be nerfed on a case-by-case basis during the application process. Potentially invasive powers such as telepathy require player permission before using them.

Characters may also gain new powers or strengthen their existing powers through the Bounty Board system. The nature of these powers differ from world to world, and certain powersets will not always be available.

MY CHARACTER IS INJURED/ILL/HAS SPECIAL NEEDS.
Characters who are mortally wounded will be treated on arrival. If their injury is not life-threatening (a broken bone, a concussion, etc.), it's up to you if they will be treated by Hathaway staff. Please note this is only for active wounds; an already-healed injury will not be treated.

The treatment of illnesses and special needs are up to player choice; you can have your character cured of any debilitating conditions or keep the conditions wholly intact. As long as the the mechanic in question does not have wide-reaching consequences for the whole game, you're free to play your ghost as invisible, your vampire as allergic to sunlight, or your ill character cured by medicine -- or not! Pick whatever is most fun or easiest for you to play. Please note on your app if you are curing your character's condition so we are aware of the change.

WHAT IF MY CHARACTER DIES?
Be aware that the game has a form of permadeath. If your character is not immortal in some way, a death will require a drop. However, the character will still be appable by others in the future.

Exceptions may be made when either game or player plot allows it, but all instances will need mod permission ahead of time. With regards to player plots, there must be a reasonable IC mechanism that explains how a character is brought back to life (e.g. another character has a canon ability to resurrect the dead), and you must check in with the mods before going forward with the revival.

1) if we were thinking of applying for a character that's under 15 but we could definitely make a case for suitability, do we need to talk to you before test driving, or are tdms gonna be free-for-alls and we just need to talk to mods before submitting the app?

2) icly how long is the transition process from ALASTAIR to Hathaway? the organization seems fairly established by the point of s2 starting, so i'm curious if it's a period of months/years or much shorter?

3) would ALASTAIR veterans be familiar with the new NPCs from the final battle with Zymandis?

4) are there going to be alternatives for retirement than going back to one's home world? i took kagari from a canonpoint not long before his death but before he's aware it's going to happen, so it'd be kind of depressing for him to go home to receive his incentive and then Die. alternatively, can a character's incentive be the prevention of their own death?

5) what's the policy on incentives that might affect other appable characters, if yours might not ask for something for themselves?

6) since the infinite universes merged in the finale of s1, i'm wondering what the new ic explanation is for characters that get dropped and reapped by a different player (and thus lack memories of their previous time in ALASTAIR/Hathaway)? are they just going to be universes that failed to merge for some reason, or...? Also, what happened to the duplicate versions of characters apped/dropped/reapped by different players in s1 of futuro during the merge?

thank you for your time! ♥

hello mods!! two quick questions, please let me know if this is in the wrong place c:

1) just to double check, are item regains from their home world no longer an option?
2) is there a time limit on the threads we can link as samples? as in, if i wanted to submit s1 threads for my network & log samples, what's the oldest thread i could submit?

thank you!!

Hello mods! I had some questions about specializations.

1) If we switch specializations, will we start back at level one? For example, let's say I'm a level five Bruiser and then switch to Inventor. Will I be a level five Inventor or level one?

2) If we switch main specializations, will that affect our secondary specialization level?

Thank you!

I apologize if I missed this anywhere, but the same typical DWRP condition of "If you work for Hathaway, time won't pass back home" remains the same, right? I assumed so off the canon updates, but I wanted to double check!

I have a couple kinda frivolous questions about the jewelcomms. Since network posts are formed via thought instead of typed out, do the words appear to the characters as they think them, or is it posted without them seeing what they wrote? Could a character accidentally form a post that’s disjointed stream-of-consciousness because thinking is so instinctual, or is that function stressed to them when they arrive in-game so they will be less likely to make that mistake? If that is probable for new characters, can they backspace, and would they have been told how to do this before using the network for the first time?

Thanks!

if we want to canon update before s2, do we just change the canonpoint in our app? the shift doesn't really affect kagari's personality or anything, but it'll make my intended incentive possible.

At his point in canon, Finn has BB-8 with him. Would he be considered a pet/robot and would have be able to bring BB-8 to Hathaway with him.

I'm so sorry if these have been answered somewhere, I ctrl+F'd "specialization" and couldn't find what I was looking for!

1 - ICly, are specialization powers granted through tech, magic, on-the-job training...? Basically, how would these manifest in play?

2 - If a character retires from their time in Hathaway/fulfills their contract, do they get to keep their Hathaway-granted specialization powers?

Hi, again, guys. I have a few questions because I was unsure of a few things.

1. Played previously in the past, but I was swept because I wasn't able to post to AC because life was a mess. I wanted to know what was your opinion on using some of the previous details I've written, the personality section or if I had to write anything outside of samples.

2. And I couldn't find an answer to this question, but with S2 coming up, could we app for two characters when the apps reopen again? Or would you prefer us to wait? Just making sure that I don't step on toes, etc. AND THAT I'M NERVOUS TO COME BACK.

possibly a strange question, but if you're canon updating your s1 character, would the hathaway recruiter be aware of your character's previous association with ALASTAIR when recruiting your character/would they mention it to them? or would it be a fresh recruitment and the character would just coincidentally get back their memories of s1 after agreeing and being transported to the new HQ?

Hello, mods! Quick question about apps and specializations!

The app seems to require two possible specializations be offered up, but what should be done in the case of a character that really only fits well with one of the specializations? Should we select a second one that like... they're least likely to mess up? Or only put one and just explain why?

Asking for a centaur too ill-educated and unimaginative to invent, too cold to take care of other recruits well, and too crap at words to be a diplomat...

I have a couple of questions!

1. Are characters still brought in to the HQ to drop their stuff off before they go out on a mission? Things work differently, but I've been running on that assumption and I realize that I might be wrong.

2. What is the pirate mission called?

quick confirmation: with the 10 day gap between apps and the mission starting, will there be a chance for mingling aboard HQ between Viridian Sea and the next mission at all?

or do we have to wait for the 15th for any ic stuff to take place (and therefore prob assume we go Viridian Sea straight to whatever the next mission is)?

Hi! In the FAQ it says that characters will not have anything important with them that was not on their person when they arrived, but that they’ll have the opportunity to regain these things later. Since I read elsewhere that regains will no longer be in the game in S2, is this going to be a mechanic after all or is it a relic from an old FAQ?

Hello! I am looking to possibly apply at a later date but I had a quick question about apps since there was something I was confused on.

At the top of the app page it states there is a hard word count of 1200 words in each section but for the personality section it states the maximum of 1000?

Does the HQ have a forge/anywhere really where metalworking can be done? Since Jhin custom makes bullets for Whisper. Or will he have to attempt to make the repair garage work for him whenever he runs out of bullets? I can't believe I'm just thinking of this now.

i may have completely missed this, apologies if i have! but when characters are recruited by Hathaway, do they start with their level 1 skill already unlocked?

ie, will the first bounty mission they do be to unlock their first skill, or will it move them to level 2?

Hi mods! I didn't see this covered here or in the canon update page, so I wanted to ask to be sure before I made any concrete plans.

If a canon update would automatically come with an incentive change due to circumstances, do we need to wait the six months to canon update or would that be a special condition?

(For example, if I wanted to canon update in three months, would I be able to change incentives when I update?)

Hi mods! Couple hiatus-related questions, as I have a long vacation coming up in March.

- Say that I had to hiatus at the end of a hiatus trimester, but had circumstances come up that required me to hiatus early on in the following trimester - i.e.: a hiatus in March and a hiatus in May. Is that still allowed, so long as they are not consecutive months / no additional hiatus requests are made during either trimester?

- If we request a hiatus but are able to make activity anyway, can we still withdraw the hiatus?

Hi mods! I'm not sure if this would go under Player Plot Suggestions or not, but let me know if I need to move the conversation there. I guess it's more of like a character personal sidequest and it seems like it'd be optional for others to want to pitch in/help out.

This is something that may happen down the line when the guild returns to Headquarters. But Laphicet wants to ask Hathaway technicians if they can or if there's a way to improve his situation by making him visible/tangible/audible to the rest of the team. However, it's something I don't want to play out as an immediate change/I'd like to make it hard on him, lol. It'd be like some sort of side project that takes place on and off through the months with a lot of trial and error.

Peter's player brought up the idea about how we can try to use their inventor skills and have them try to make something that can help Laphicet achieve this. Possibly through gathering (SUPER RARE?!) materials and creating new components to upgrade his magitek or make a new magitek that enables everyone to see him? Would something like this be possible?
